ART START – from drawing to collage

Sturt Summer School, Mittagong

Develop and strengthen your drawing skills through a better understanding of basic techniques and materials with a view to producing finished work. Explore different media – charcoal, graphite, pastels, coloured pencils, ink and wash and a range of papers and techniques to produce strong confident drawings and further develop your work using collage and over drawing techniques on paper and canvas.

Artist and printmaker Marianne Courtenay draws regularly and has kept visual diaries since her student days providing a rich reference for her work – even her most recent digital prints incorporate drawn elements.

Marianne’s work is held in public, corporate and private collections in Australia, US, UK, Japan and France. Marianne is an experienced and popular tutor who inspires her students with her knowledge of her subject and her infectious enthusiasm.

COLLAGRAPH PRINTING

Mt. Kembla, NSW
9th – 11th August 2014

A collagraph printing plate is built up like a collage using paper, card, an assortment of other materials of different textures and densities and different types of bonding materials and gloss finishes. Both relief and intaglio printing techniques can be used but a press is usually necessary. In the intaglio technique the finished plate is treated in the same way as an etching plate – that is, printing ink is worked into the surface and then the excess is wiped off according to the requirements of the final image. As in other print techniques, a range of colours can be achieved by using more than one plate, by applying different colours to the one plate, or by a combination of these methods.

Subject to the requirements of the image Marianne uses both relief and intaglio techniques in the making and printing of her collagraphs and will take participants through the particular processes used in a selection of her works. Over the 3 days participants will make at least two collagraph plates out of card, paper and gesso with the optional inclusion of other materials to achieve specific tonal and textural effects.  In inking up and printing, participants will be able to explore the use of background plates and the application of a number of colours on the one plate to achieve multi-colour images.

To join the workshop please contact Liz Jeneid – ejeneid@ozemail.com.au

Cost for 3 day workshop is: $285 + material costs

10 – 4 pm each day. Tea & coffee will be supplied.
